Here's the process on how the final concept shown above was developed:

I started with some thumbnail sketches exploring various shapes and silhuettes. 

After some feedback from the Art Director, I further developed some of the thumbnail sketches. From the more developed designs we chose elements that we liked and incorporated them into the final concept art.
